Celebrate and Grill Safely This Summer!

Spring is here, and with it comes the perfect excuse to fire up the grill and enjoy some outdoor cooking. But before you dive into backyard BBQ mode, take a moment to brush up on grill safety — because no one wants a fire to be the main course. According to the National Fire Protection Association, gas grills are linked to nearly 9,300 home fires each year. Don’t let your plans go up in smoke! Keep your cookout safe and fun with these essential tips:

  • Only grill outdoors – Whether you’re using propane or charcoal, your grill belongs outside. Never use it in a garage or under an overhang.
  • Keep your distance – Set your grill up far away from your home, deck railings, overhanging branches, building eaves, or anything else that can burn.
  • Create a kid- and pet-free zone – Make sure children and pets stay at least three feet away from the grilling area.
  • Never leave a hot grill unattended – Fires can start and spread quickly. Always stay close and keep an eye on the grill.
  • Clean regularly – Grease and fat buildup can cause flare-ups. Clean the grill grates and empty the grease trays after each use.
  • Dispose of coals properly – Let charcoal cool completely before placing the ashes into a metal container. Always keep a hot grill away from anything flammable.

A little preparation goes a long way in preventing accidents. So grab your tongs, season that steak, and grill with confidence — safely!
